PhD Research Fellowship: Tumor-Host Interaction in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC)
The University of Oslo invites applications for a full-time, 3-year PhD Research Fellowship in the Oral Physiology and Cancer Research Group (OPCG) at the Institute of Oral Biology, Faculty of Dentistry. This position centers on the project 'Tumor-host interaction in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)', aiming to unravel the complex interplay between oral cancer cells and adjacent stromal cells, with a particular focus on the influence of invading cancer cells on skeletal muscle tissue.
The research will investigate the molecular profile of infiltrated skeletal muscle cells and assess the functional roles and prognostic significance of selected miRNAs and proteins. High-throughput analytical methods, including transcriptomic and proteomic profiling, will be employed alongside advanced 2D and 3D cell culture models. The project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge cancer biology research in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.
Applicants should possess a Master’s degree equivalent to a Norwegian Master’s in dentistry, molecular biology, or a closely related field, with a thesis grade of B or better. Preference will be given to candidates with a dental degree or strong background in cancer/oral cancer biology. Proficiency in English and Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language) is required. Experience with immunohistochemical/immunofluorescence techniques, cell culturing, molecular biology methods, digital image analysis, and high-throughput data analysis (RNA seq, proteomics) is advantageous. Prior publications in international peer-reviewed journals are valued.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant research group and is expected to collaborate with PhD, Master’s, and Bachelor’s students. The University of Oslo is committed to diversity, inclusion, and providing a supportive work environment, including welfare schemes, career development opportunities, and up to 1.5 hours of exercise per week during working hours. The position offers a competitive salary (NOK 551,000–605,000 per year), membership in one of Norway’s best pension schemes, and other public sector benefits.
Applications must be submitted via the Jobbnorge recruitment system and include an application letter, CV, publication list, project description, transcripts, certificates, and contact information for 2-3 references. All documentation should be in English or a Scandinavian language. The deadline for applications is 26th February 2026. For further information, contact Professor Tine Merete Søland at [email protected].
This is an excellent opportunity for motivated candidates to advance their research career in oral cancer biology at one of Europe’s leading dental faculties. The University of Oslo provides a stimulating academic environment and is Norway’s oldest and highest-ranked educational and research institution.
