Doctoral Scholarship Student in Electrochemical Engineering

The University of Antwerp, a leading European institution, is offering a full-time doctoral scholarship position in electrochemical engineering within the ELCAT research group at the Faculty of Applied Engineering. The successful candidate will work on the ERC Consolidator grant TRANSCEND, focusing on gaining an in-depth understanding of multiphase mass transfer in CO2 electrolyzers through the application of engineered, ordered reactor components. The project aims to develop technologies for large-scale deployment of CO2 electrolyzers, with a particular emphasis on mitigating salt precipitation via innovative gas diffusion electrode (GDE) and electrolyzer design. The doctoral student will be responsible for developing novel porous electrodes with precise control over porosity and composition, and for establishing critical reactor operating parameters such as water supply and pulsing to minimize salt deposition and enhance the durability of zero gap CO2 electrolyzers. The position involves publishing scientific articles and/or patents related to the research, as well as supporting general research and teaching tasks within the ELCAT group and the Faculty of Applied Engineering. Safety in the research labs, especially regarding gases and chemicals, is a shared responsibility. Applicants should hold a relevant Master’s degree (industrial science/applied engineering: chemistry, engineering: chemistry or materials science, civil engineering, chemistry, or equivalent), demonstrate excellent academic results, and possess strong communication, planning, organizational, and technical skills. The scholarship is initially for one year, with the possibility of renewal for up to three additional years following a positive evaluation. The monthly stipend is determined according to the university’s pay scales for Contract Research Staff (Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP). The work will primarily take place at Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating environment. The University of Antwerp values diversity and inclusivity, encouraging applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The application deadline is 12 November 2025, and candidates should apply online, submitting a motivation letter and academic CV. For further information, applicants can contact the research group via [email protected].
