Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Creative Writing, Education, and Youth Mental Health
York St John University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the AHRC-funded Creative Writing Together project in York, UK. This part-time, fixed-term position (18.5 hours per week for 3 years) is based in the School of Education, Language and Psychology, which is known for its innovative, interdisciplinary research addressing social injustice and community wellbeing. The project focuses on supporting and researching creative writing workshops designed to improve youth mental health through community and school engagement.
The successful candidate will contribute to impactful research on creative writing and wellbeing, deliver workshops with children, parents/carers, and schools, and produce research outputs such as articles, guides, and an anthology. The role involves using action research methodologies, including pre- and post-programme questionnaires and interviews, to evaluate how co-creative writing—enhanced by GenAI—can foster stronger relationships within families and schools. The project aims to address the current mental health crisis affecting young people by promoting positive mental health through creative engagement.
Applicants must hold a PhD or EdD in social sciences, have experience in creative writing, and be skilled in planning and delivering creative writing workshops with children. Experience in action research and data collection is essential, while knowledge of the education system and working with teachers is desirable. An enhanced DBS check is required. The position is not eligible for Skilled Worker Visa sponsorship, so candidates must have the right to work in the UK.
The salary is £34,610 to £39,906 per annum pro rata (£17,305 - £19,953 per annum), and the university offers a comprehensive benefits package, including annual leave, pension scheme, health cash plan, and support for relocation and visa costs where applicable.
