PhD Fellowships in Artistic Research: AI and Creativity in Film, TV, and Games

The University of Inland Norway (INN) is offering two PhD Research Fellowships in artistic research, focusing on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and creativity within film, television, and games. These positions are based at the Faculty of Film, TV, and Games (FTVS) and are affiliated with the MishMash Centre for AI and Creativity, a major Norwegian AI centre funded by the Research Council of Norway (2025-2030). MishMash brings together over 200 faculty members from various higher education institutions and partners across the public and private sectors, aiming to explore, create, and reflect on AI in creative practices. As a PhD fellow, you will actively participate in MishMash’s research groups and work packages, collaborating across the network and engaging in all relevant activities. The research will investigate how AI is transforming creative processes in film, TV, and games, addressing both opportunities and challenges. Key themes include the integration of generative AI systems into ideation and production, maintaining creative autonomy, and exploring the ethical, cultural, and market implications of AI in creative industries. The project encourages artistic exploration to push boundaries, critically engage with AI biases, and inspire the development of inclusive, artist-centred tools. The doctoral project should be rooted in artistic practice, with explicit reflection to share methods and insights. Possible research areas include producing, directing (fiction or documentary), scriptwriting, cinematography, production design, editing, sound design, film music, VFX, animation, game design, 3D modelling, and VR. Interdisciplinary approaches are welcome, provided artistic practice remains central. The workplace may be at The Norwegian Film School or The TV School in Lillehammer, or The Game School in Hamar, with flexibility for project work and exchanges. The position is for three years, with a possible fourth year dedicated to teaching, supervision, and dissemination activities. Admission to the PhD Programme in Artistic Research in Film and Related Audiovisual Arts is required, and the final project plan must be approved within three months of employment. Applicants must hold a five-year master’s degree in performing or creative arts (or equivalent), with an average grade of B or better, and demonstrate an artistic background in film, TV, games, or related audiovisual art forms. Excellent English proficiency is mandatory. Applicants who already hold a PhD or are still enrolled in a master’s programme at the deadline are ineligible.
