Climate resilience and adaptation research

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position focused on climate resilience of interdependent infrastructure systems in the Netherlands. The research is part of the Transformative Adaptation Strategies for Interdependent Critical Infrastructure (TASICI) project, which involves collaborations with leading infrastructure partners such as Schiphol, Rijkswaterstaat, Port of Rotterdam, ProRail, and Vervoersregio Amsterdam. The project aims to develop participatory models to strengthen the climate resilience of critical infrastructure, integrating climate hazard data, infrastructure network models, and participatory methods with operators. Case studies include the Greater Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and the Rhine-Alpine Rail Corridor. The successful candidate will work closely with both research and infrastructure partners, with opportunities to spend time at partner offices. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in a relevant field, experience with geospatial modelling, large datasets, and programming (Python preferred), and a strong motivation for climate adaptation research. The position offers a competitive salary, benefits, and support for relocation. The application deadline is 7 September 2025, and candidates should apply online with the required documents. Supervision will be provided by Dr. Jasper Verschuur (TU Delft), Dr. Elco Koks (VU Amsterdam), and Prof. Dr. Wijnand Veeneman (TU Delft).
