Postdoc in Bioplastics and Polymer Chemistry at National Museum of Denmark
The National Museum of Denmark is offering a two-year postdoctoral position in the research project 'Healthy Plastics from Waste,' supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The project focuses on developing innovative bioplastics by converting low-value paper-based waste, such as paper cups, newspapers, cigarette butts, and cotton clothing fibers, into high-value, sustainable plastics. The research aims to replace fossil fuels in plastic production with waste materials, contributing to environmental sustainability and the development of long-lasting products like water filters and toothbrush handles.
The successful candidate will join the Environmental Archaeology and Materials Science group, collaborating with museum researchers and external partners in sustainability, design, and production. The postdoc will develop and optimize laboratory methods for converting purified waste cellulose into cellulose acetate plastics, improve sustainability by replacing fossil-based additives and solvents, and analyze the chemical and physical properties of the resulting plastics. Additional responsibilities include shaping plastics into prototype products and presenting research findings to diverse audiences.
Applicants must have a PhD in polymer chemistry, polymer science, or environmental chemistry, with hands-on experience working with polymers and a strong theoretical background. Proficiency in FTIR spectroscopy for polymer analysis is required, while experience with thermal analysis, microscopy, plastic processing, or environmental impact assessment is advantageous. Candidates should be effective communicators in English, collaborative, and willing to contribute to academic papers and funding applications.
The position is fully funded for two years, with salary and employment terms governed by Danish Ministry of Finance agreements. The appointment starts on 1st April 2026 or shortly thereafter. Applications must be submitted in English via the National Museum's recruitment system by 7th February 2026 and include a motivation letter, CV, list of publications, up to three publications, and transcripts (with English translation if necessary).
