PhD in High Speed Spatial Light Modulators Based on MEMS Integrated Metasurfaces at Aarhus University

Aarhus University is offering a PhD position in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, focusing on the development of high speed spatial light modulators (SLMs) based on MEMS integrated metasurfaces. The project aims to advance the dynamic control of light for applications in photonics, including holographic displays, augmented reality, bio-imaging, quantum technologies, optical imaging, optical communication, laser pulse shaping, and LiDAR. The research will combine micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and metasurface concepts to overcome the speed limitations of current liquid crystal and micro-mirror based SLMs. The successful candidate will engage in designing and simulating MEMS integrated metasurface devices, micro- and nanofabrication in a cleanroom environment, and electrical and optical characterization of spatial light modulators. The project is ideal for candidates passionate about hands-on experimental research and device fabrication. Applicants should have a relevant master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Physics, or Optical Engineering, and be motivated to work in both theoretical and experimental settings. Prior cleanroom experience is preferred but not required. The position is supervised by Associate Professor Pernille Klarskov Hansen and Assistant Professor Zhengli Han. The place of employment is Aarhus University, Denmark. The application deadline is 31 March 2026, with a preferred start date of 01 September 2026 or later. Salary and terms of employment follow the applicable collective agreement. For more information and to apply, visit the provided application link or contact the supervisors directly by email.
