About this position
The Laboratory for Muscle Diseases and Neuropathies at the Department of Neurosciences, KU Leuven, Belgium, invites applications for a PhD scholarship focused on the study of hereditary and acquired neuromuscular diseases. This interdisciplinary project aims to advance understanding of the natural history, outcome measures, blood biomarkers, muscle imaging, genetics, genotype-phenotype correlations, and innovative treatments for patients with diverse neuromuscular conditions.
The research will utilize state-of-the-art technologies, including advanced MR imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) tools, to explore novel clinical and biochemical biomarkers as potential outcome measures in future clinical trials. The translational nature of the project is emphasized by the direct clinical implementation of these AI-driven MRI techniques. The successful candidate will collaborate intensively with other specialties and research groups within KU Leuven and UZ Leuven, and will be actively involved in patient recruitment at University Hospitals Leuven.
Applicants should have a master's degree in medicine, movement sciences, physiotherapy, biomedical sciences, medical sciences, or a related discipline, preferably with distinction. Strong motivation and commitment to pursuing a PhD in neuromuscular diseases are essential, as are excellent social skills for patient interaction. Proficiency in Dutch and English, both spoken and written, is required. Additional competencies include being proactive, communicative, accurate, able to work independently and in a team, and possessing good organizational and coordination skills.
The scholarship is offered for 24 months, with the possibility of extension for another 24 months, aiming for PhD completion after 48 months. The project will be supervised by Prof. dr. Kristl Claeys, neurologist and neuromuscular specialist at UZ Leuven and Head of the Laboratory of Muscle Diseases and Neuropathies at KU Leuven. The position provides access to cutting-edge technologies in outcome measures, biomarker research, genetics, MR imaging, and AI, within a dynamic and productive research environment that supports further development and training.
KU Leuven is committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment, embracing diversity and equal opportunity. The anticipated start date is flexible, with possible commencement from February 1st, 2026. For further information, applicants are encouraged to contact Prof. dr. Kristl Claeys at [email protected].
