Description
Royal Holloway, University of London, announces three fully funded PhD studentships supported by the AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards. As one of the UK's top 30 research universities, Royal Holloway offers a vibrant and innovative research environment, encouraging both established and emerging scholars to excel. The university leads and partners with several Doctoral Training Partnerships and Centres for Doctoral Training, including AHRC DLA, AHRC Techne, ESRC SEDarc, BBSRC LIDo, NERC Aries, NERC TREES, and EPSRC AI and Digital Inclusion, providing a broad interdisciplinary platform for postgraduate research.
Successful applicants will join a strong and growing postgraduate research community, benefiting from an excellent Researcher Development programme, annual conferences, PGR-led activities, and opportunities to engage with peers across disciplines. The studentships are open to candidates interested in a wide range of fields, including Humanities, Life & Environment Sciences, Law & Social Sciences, and Performing and Digital Arts. Directors of Postgraduate Research Education in these schools—Professor Andrew Jotischky (Humanities), Dr Rebecca Fisher (Life & Environment Sciences), Professor Emily Glorney (Law & Social Sciences), and Professor Tina K. Ramnarine (Performing and Digital Arts)—are available for queries regarding opportunities and supervision.
Funding for these awards covers UK-rate tuition fees and a UKRI-rate stipend (£22,780 for 2025/26, including London Allowance) for 3.5 years, plus a 3-month placement for career-enhancing research activity. While the majority of awards are for UK students, up to 30% are available for international applicants. Applicants must be available to start on 21 September 2026.
To apply, candidates should first explore the university and department-specific webpages to identify a suitable supervisor and contact them directly to secure support for their application. Applicants may propose their own research project or develop one suggested by a supervisor. Applications must be prepared following the guidance document provided on the university website and submitted via the Royal Holloway Applicant Portal by 12 January 2026, 12pm GMT. An information event for prospective applicants will be held on 12 November at 5pm to address questions about doctoral study and the application process.
Royal Holloway is committed to supporting students from all backgrounds and encourages applications from diverse candidates. This is an excellent opportunity to pursue doctoral research in a dynamic, supportive, and interdisciplinary academic environment with substantial funding and professional development resources.
