About this position

This Transforming Lives PhD scholarship at Sheffield Hallam University offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in real-world hand and upper limb position monitoring for children affected by neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP). NBPP is a condition resulting from birth injury to the brachial plexus, leading to paralysis and sensory loss in the arm and hand. While some cases resolve spontaneously, a significant proportion require intensive physiotherapy and reconstructive surgery. The project aims to develop and apply advanced technological solutions, such as wireless inertial measurement units and computer vision, to accurately assess arm function and range of motion both in clinical settings and during daily activities. This research will help clinicians understand individual movement limitations, plan physiotherapy and surgical interventions, and evaluate outcomes post-intervention. The successful candidate will join Dr Ben Heller’s group at the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, collaborating with the Leeds Children’s Hand Clinic, a leading UK center for NBPP care and pediatric microsurgery. The research environment is highly rated, with strong support for postgraduate students and a commitment to impactful, patient-centered research. The scholarship covers home PhD fees and provides a living wage stipend, but international/EU students must self-fund the fee difference. Applicants should have a strong academic background in medical engineering, computer science, or biomechanics, with an MSc and experience working with human participants considered advantageous. English language proficiency (IELTS 7 or equivalent) is mandatory for non-exempt international applicants. The application process requires a detailed research proposal specific to the project, submission of academic references, and adherence to strict guidelines regarding proposal originality. The closing date for applications is November 20, 2025, with interviews scheduled for December 4. This is an excellent opportunity for motivated candidates interested in medical science, sports science, and biomedical engineering to make a real-world impact on pediatric rehabilitation and patient outcomes.
