Description

This PhD project at Edinburgh Napier University, within the School of Computing, Engineering & the Built Environment, focuses on the design and personalisation of social robots for diverse audiences and contexts. With the increasing presence of humanoid social robots and varied public reactions, the research aims to create machines that not only perform tasks efficiently but also deliver excellent user experiences and pleasurable interactions. Recognising the importance of personalisation in future human-robot relationships, the project will investigate how social robots can be tailored to individual preferences, circumstances, and behaviours across a spectrum of activities. The research will draw on interdisciplinary knowledge from Human-Computer Interaction, Human-Robot Interaction, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, and User Experience. Applicants should have a first-class honours degree or a distinction at master level in a relevant field, with strong fundamental knowledge in the aforementioned areas. Essential skills include interpersonal, communication, and writing abilities, while practical experience in research or industry is considered advantageous. English language proficiency is required, with an IELTS score of at least 6.5 (minimum 6.0 in each component) or equivalent. The studentship covers full UK or international tuition fees and provides a standard living allowance at the RCUK rate (£21,383 per annum, subject to annual increases). International applicants should note that visa application costs and the NHS health surcharge are not included and must be covered independently. The application process requires submission of a completed application form, CV, two academic references, a two-page research project outline, a one-page statement of motivation and fit, and evidence of English proficiency if applicable. Applicants must quote the reference 'SCEBE1125' and use the advertised project title. For informal enquiries, contact Dr Emilia Sobolewska at [email protected]. The deadline for applications is January 9, 2026.
