About this position
This fully funded PhD position at KU Leuven is a joint opportunity between the Department of Electrical Engineering (MICAS research group) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy (Quantum Solid-State Physics division, QSP), sponsored by Proximus. The project bridges engineering and scientific aspects, focusing on the design and nano fabrication of superconducting devices and integrated circuits for quantum technologies. The successful candidate will work on manipulating and reading out qubits (superconducting and spin qubits) using custom cryogenic CMOS circuits, with the aim of enabling scalable quantum computers. Initial work involves characterizing qubits with room temperature equipment, followed by the design and implementation of custom CMOS chips to replace this equipment.
The MICAS group is renowned for its expertise in analog, digital, mixed-signal, biomedical, and cryogenic integrated circuit design, while QSP focuses on quantum phenomena at the atomic and microscopic scale, including functional electric properties in low-dimensional systems. The candidate will benefit from access to state-of-the-art experimental facilities, an interdisciplinary and international research environment, and opportunities for training, conference participation, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a strong background in quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, or chip design. Experience in experimental quantum systems, low-temperature physics, microwave engineering, or chip tape-outs is preferred but not required. Excellent communication skills, teamwork, and fluency in English are essential. The position is fully funded for up to four years, subject to positive progress evaluation, and is available immediately.
