About this position

The Jena School for Microbial Communication (JSMC) at Friedrich Schiller University Jena is offering doctoral and postdoctoral researcher positions focused on microbial communication. The JSMC is a vibrant graduate school with over 130 scientists, providing structured, interdisciplinary PhD and career training programs based on top-level fundamental research. The Cluster of Excellence ‘Balance of the Microverse’ investigates the fundamental principles of microbial community interactions and functions across diverse habitats, including oceans, groundwater, plants, and human hosts.

Successful candidates will join a highly communicative scientific network with access to top-level research facilities. Projects may have wet-lab or computational focus, aiming to decode microbial balance in a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment. The positions are supported by a comprehensive mentoring program, with supervision by a team of advisors, and offer training in state-of-the-art research technologies, transferable skills, and soft skills.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree or PhD (or equivalent) in Natural or Life Sciences (such as Biology, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Geosciences, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, etc.). Candidates nearing completion of their degree are also encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will demonstrate high motivation, creativity, and interest in shaping their own thesis or postdoc project, as well as an integrative and cooperative personality and excellent English communication skills.

Doctoral researcher positions are offered for 3 years (TV-L E13, 65%), and postdoctoral positions for 2 years (TV-L E13, 100%). Funding is provided by the JSMC through the Thuringian State government (2026-2028) and subsequently through the Excellence Strategy of the German Federal and State governments (2029). The University of Jena and participating research institutes are equal opportunity employers, and part-time contracts can be discussed. Candidates with severe disabilities will be given preference in the case of equal qualifications and suitability.

To apply, refer to individual job offers and submit your application via the online portal by April 25, 2026. Selected applicants will be invited to the JSMC Recruitment Meeting in Jena, Germany, with the option for an online interview. Awarding decisions will be made shortly after the interviews, allowing projects to start immediately. Join the JSMC and the Cluster of Excellence in exploring how microbial balance shapes life and unlocks its potential for a healthier future.
