The University of Cologne, one of Europe's largest and oldest universities, is offering a doctoral position in biochemistry/isotope geochemistry with a focus on radiocarbon studies (Wiss2601-10). The position is based in the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy, specifically within the Organic Geochemistry & Radiocarbon group. The research project centers on characterizing microbial communities and their role in carbon cycling in permafrost soils of the Arctic, particularly under warmer and wetter conditions. Key tasks include planning and conducting field measurements in Arctic regions, organizing fieldwork logistics, sampling sediments and water, and measuring CO2 and CH4 fluxes. The project involves analyzing organic matter composition and microbial communities using advanced organic-geochemical techniques, conducting laboratory experiments, and applying and improving methods such as CO2 and CH4 samplers and vacuum systems. Data analysis will utilize statistical methods, and results are expected to be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at conferences.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with national and international partners, contributing to a diverse and dynamic research environment. The position offers a three-year contract, part-time (27.88 hours per week), with flexible working time models and opportunities to work remotely.
