The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary and international research university in Finland, invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in the Centre of Excellence in Space Resilience. This opportunity is based within the Space Physics and Astronomy Research Unit (SPA RU) at the Faculty of Science, specifically in the Cosmic Rays research group led by Professor Ilya Usoskin. The SPA RU is renowned for its research in ionospheric physics, space climate, cosmic rays, and astronomy, and is actively involved in large-scale national and European projects.

The Centre of Excellence in Space Resilience focuses on understanding space conditions, particularly space weather, and advancing sustainable space usage. The successful candidate will conduct advanced modelling of the radiation environment in the atmosphere and near-Earth space, including extreme solar events. Research topics include heliospheric, magnetospheric, and ionospheric physics, cosmic rays, atmospheric effects, and planetary sciences. The position offers the chance to collaborate with a dynamic, international team of about 30 researchers, working on cutting-edge science in a highly supportive environment.

Key responsibilities include performing advanced modelling of the near-Earth radiation environment, collaborating with group members in cosmic rays, magnetospheric, ionospheric, and climate modelling, publishing peer-reviewed articles, presenting at scientific conferences, and completing graduate studies culminating in a doctoral thesis. The position is fixed-term for four years, starting June 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter, with a six-month trial period. Work is conducted in person at the Linnanmaa campus in Oulu.

Applicants must have completed an M.Sc. or equivalent in Space Physics, Geosciences, or a related field by the time of appointment. Preferred qualifications are knowledge of electrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, geosciences, solar physics, experience in numerical modelling, programming skills (Python, Matlab, Fortran, C), willingness to learn, and strong communication skills. Candidates must also meet the requirements of the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS).
