About this position
The University of Jyväskylä’s Department of Biological and Environmental Science invites applications for 1–2 Doctoral Researcher positions in Theoretical Evolutionary Biology, focusing on sexual selection theory. The positions are fixed-term, starting from September 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter, for a maximum of 3.5 years. The main research task is to develop mathematical models in sexual selection theory within the research group led by Associate Professor Jussi Lehtonen. The project aims to identify common causal and mathematical structures across models of sexual selection and sexual strategies, with explicit attention to the defining features of sexes and sexual selection.
Applicants should possess strong mathematical modelling skills and a high motivation to learn new skills. Familiarity with mathematical programming languages such as Matlab or Mathematica is advantageous but not essential. The project offers flexibility for developing original ideas and sub-projects, and candidates should demonstrate independence, problem-solving skills, teamwork ability, and excellent written and verbal communication skills. The position is intended for completion of a doctoral thesis and includes research, doctoral studies, teaching assistance, and related duties. A suitable Master’s degree is required, or candidates must be about to obtain one. A good command of English is essential. Selected candidates must apply for postgraduate study rights through the Faculty of Mathematics and Science after selection.
