About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in Control-oriented system identification within the Division of Systems and Control at the Department of Electrical Engineering. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in advancing data-driven control methodologies and contributing to innovative research in a collaborative and dynamic environment.
The department is renowned for its research and education in areas such as Communications, Antennas and Optical Networks, Systems and Control, Signal Processing, Biomedical Engineering, and Electric Power Engineering. The Automatic Control unit, where this position is based, focuses on developing sustainable and smart solutions to societal challenges, including energy efficiency and electrification across transport, production systems, communication, and biomedical engineering.
The research project centers on model-based control, a prime framework for certifiably-safe regulation of dynamical systems. When system dynamics are complex, nonlinear, and partially unknown, models are typically derived from observations through system identification. This project will explore control-oriented biases and their impact on system identification and control, addressing persistence of excitation, safe exploration, input design, and connections with direct control methods. The aim is to improve downstream control performance by integrating control objectives into the identification process.
Applicants must hold a Master's degree (masterexamen) of 120 credits or a Master's degree (magisterexamen) of 60 credits in Engineering or Applied Mathematics, preferably with a major in automatic control or similar. For candidates educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted. Experience in system identification and machine learning is considered a merit. Physical presence is required throughout the study period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, extending the position to five years. The starting salary is 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025), and doctoral students are employees with full benefits.
Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, with generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender balance and equality, actively supporting initiatives such as the GENIE Initiative. Swedish language courses are available for non-native speakers to help with settling in.
To apply, submit your application online using the provided application form. Attach all required documents as PDF files in English, including CV, personal letter, motivation, thesis, and transcripts. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is April 15, 2026. For questions, contact Assistant Professor Anna Scampicchio at [email protected].
