About this position

The University of Greenwich is offering a fully funded PhD position in the Lam Research Group, focused on developing disruptive synthetic technologies for electrifying organic synthesis. This project, supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), aims to create a new electrochemical arylation platform utilizing unprecedented transformations and novel electrode materials. By harnessing electricity as a clean reagent, the research seeks to advance sustainable methodologies for synthesizing high-value organic molecules, including pharmaceuticals and functional materials.

As a PhD candidate, you will join an internationally recognized research group at the Medway Campus in Kent, working within a diverse and dynamic team. The project offers unique opportunities for collaboration with leading academic and industrial partners across Europe, enabling international networking, scientific exchange, and potential industrial placements. You will gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art electrochemical tools, flow systems, and analytical instrumentation, building a skill set that bridges fundamental mechanistic insight and real-world application.

The position is ideal for motivated and proactive researchers with a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry, electrochemistry, or related disciplines. Creativity, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential. Excellent communication skills are required for both written and oral scientific work. The MSCA mobility rule applies, meaning candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the UK for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the recruitment date or call deadline.

Funding includes a salary of £60,200 (gross) for three years, a relocation allowance of approximately 6000 EUR, and a family allowance of 495 EUR/month if eligible. The research environment at the University of Greenwich offers proximity to London’s scientific hubs and a peaceful, historic setting.
