About this position
During take-off birds accelerate primarily through from the ground reaction force, with aerodynamics playing a lesser role.In landing things are quite different; birds use mainly aerodynamic drag on the wings to decelerate, with the legs bringing them finally to rest after touchdown. These manoeuvres are characterised by the coordination of the wings and legs to manipulate aerodynamic and ground-reaction forces. They are complex, varied, and rapid.Take-off and landing is understood relatively well in terms of biomechanical studies and kinematic analysis of individual species. But there exists limited understanding of the underlying mechanics and stability of these systems. The mixture of aerodynamic and ground-reaction forces and moments makes the stability problem unique to birds, and a rich scientific problem to address.This project will aim to unearth new means of tackling the stability problem that couples both aerodynamic and terrestrial motion stability. The techniques for doing so will include theoretical models of varying degrees of complexity, and also physical flight experiments. The impact of the project will be to provide new fundamental understanding of the evolution of bird structures and geometry, and of the dynamic behaviours that birds exhibit in nature.The project would be of particular interest to applicants with experience and interest in theoretical and/or numerical modelling, and practical experimentation.
