PhD Opportunity: Computational Biomechanics and Medical Engineering at University of Leeds
This fully-funded PhD project focuses on developing in silico tools for the virtual testing of patient-specific maxilla-facial implants, particularly temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacements. The research is based in the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (iMBE), School of Mechanical Engineering, University of Leeds, and is conducted in collaboration with Attenborough Medical, a leading UK custom implant manufacturer.
The interdisciplinary project integrates experimental biomechanics and computational biomechanical modelling, aiming to create validated computational tools for preclinical evaluation of bespoke TMJ implants. Advances in 3D medical imaging and additive manufacturing have enabled the design and 3D printing of patient-specific implants, which must be rigorously tested to ensure suitability for individual patients. The project will use finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate implant performance under physiological loads and validate these models with experimental data from 3D printed implants.
Research Environment and Training
You will join a dynamic, multi-disciplinary research group at iMBE, gaining technical skills in computational modelling, 3D image analysis, and experimental testing. Training will cover laboratory methods, health and safety, project management, scientific writing, and presentation skills. The environment encourages collaboration, public engagement, and participation in international conferences.
Supervisory Team
The project is supervised by Dr Pete Watson (Associate Professor), Dr Marlène Mengoni, Prof Sophie Williams, and Dr Flavia Pires Rodrigues, all at University of Leeds, with expertise in experimental and computational testing of medical implants.
Eligibility and Requirements
Applicants should have at least a first or upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as biomechanics, mechanical engineering, or biomedical engineering. Experience in biomechanics, finite element analysis, 3D image analysis, or experimental testing is beneficial. Experience with human or animal tissue is advantageous but not essential. English language proficiency is required for non-native speakers. Required documents: full transcripts, personal statement, and CV.
