About this position

RMIT University is offering a fully funded PhD opportunity as part of the ARC Discovery Project 'Making Histories: Young People as Visual Historians of Changing Cities.' This project investigates how young people contribute to urban change in Naarm (Melbourne) and Djilang (Geelong), focusing on marginalised or underrepresented histories, urban transformation, and visual/documentary approaches to history-making. The successful candidate will develop a doctoral project centered on diverse communities and histories of urban change, collaborating with museums, archives, galleries, and community partners. Research interests may include public history, urban history, applied history, museum and archival studies, community history, history education, decolonial and Critical Indigenous Studies, and youth agency in historical practice.

The PhD is open to domestic applicants based in Australia with backgrounds in historical studies or related fields. The position is fully funded, covering tuition and providing a stipend, as part of a nationally funded research initiative. Applicants are encouraged to have interests in community-engaged research and visual/documentary history-making. The project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a significant research collaboration while developing an independent doctoral project with real-world impact in Melbourne and Geelong.

To apply, candidates should prepare their application materials and contact Associate Professor David Rousell at [email protected]. For more information, visit the official RMIT scholarship page or review the ARC Discovery Project details. This opportunity is ideal for those passionate about history, community engagement, and urban change.
