About this position

The Advanced Flow and Heat Transfer Lab (AFHTL) in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Missouri is seeking highly motivated PhD students for fully funded positions starting Spring or Fall 2026. The research focus is on thermal-fluid sciences, nuclear thermal hydraulics, advanced energy system thermal management, and design/optimization. Students will engage in experimental and theoretical investigations of fluid flow and heat transfer, utilizing advanced visualization techniques (HSV, PIV/LIF, IRC, X-Ray/Neutron radiography), machine learning, and multi-physics simulation tools. Projects include energy system design/optimization, reactor thermal-hydraulics, and the development of state-of-the-art multi-scale simulation methods to support clean energy system design.

Applicants should have a B.S. or M.S. in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, nuclear engineering, materials science and engineering, or related fields. Preferred qualifications include experience in thermal-fluid labs, energy system numerical analysis (CFD codes, TRACE, COBRA-TF), strong mathematics and programming skills (Python, Matlab, Fortran, C++), and excellent communication skills. The lab values self-motivated individuals who can work independently and collaboratively.

The position is fully funded, covering stipend, benefits, and tuition. Additional fellowships are available for outstanding candidates. The University of Missouri is a top-tier research institution with world-class facilities and a strong focus on interdisciplinary research in energy systems, fluid mechanics, and advanced manufacturing. The AFHTL, led by Dr. Yue Jin, is dedicated to innovative research in single-phase and multi-phase flow, energy transfer, and safety analysis of advanced power generation systems.

To apply, submit your CV, unofficial transcripts, and representative publications (if any) in a single PDF to Dr. Yue Jin at [email protected]. International applicants should review language and financial requirements via the provided links. For more information, visit the lab and department websites.
