About this position

We are looking for an exceptionally motivated individual to undertake a fully funded PhD project (open to both UK and international students) at the Microwave Integrated Systems Laboratory (MISL), University of Birmingham. Robust, high-resolution sensing technologies that deliver precise target recognition are critical enablers of autonomous driving, as well as significantly enhancing the safety and reliability of vehicles. Consequently, sensors operating at sub-THz frequencies are of interest in advancing these capabilities.

This PhD project will focus on developing novel sub-THz sensing strategies for automatic recognition and classification in the complex scenarios. The successful candidate will engage in the modelling of physical phenomena related to signal returns from various targets and clutter, as well as the development of AI/ML algorithms and techniques for recognition and classification.

Applicant Requirements

We welcome applications from students who hold or expect to achieve a first-class degree in electronic engineering, computer science or related fields. The ideal candidate should have experience with signal processing, machine learning, and/or radar technology, with proficiency in programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB) and strong communication skills.

What we Offer

You will join a dynamic and supportive research environment, working closely with leading experts and academics in the MISL at the University of Birmingham and one of the world top industrial companies. This position offers access to state-of-the-art research facilities and extensive opportunities for collaborations with international and industry leaders.
