About this position
This PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton focuses on the precision fabrication of high-performance functional structures at the nanoscale, leveraging advanced lithographic techniques. The project, supervised by Dr Daniel Zabek, aims to develop multifunctional material structures with unique responses and functionalities, particularly for applications in wireless energy and information transfer, as well as biomedicine.
Recent advances in nanoparticle technology have enabled the creation of engineered nanostructures whose collective effects surpass those of individual materials. The research will explore the assembly of magnetic nanoparticles within electrically insulating matrices, allowing for external control and manipulation via magnetic, optical, electrical, and mechanical stimuli. This multidisciplinary project is based within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, offering collaboration opportunities with the School of Engineering, School of Physics, Southampton Nanofabrication Centre, and the School of Biosciences.
Students will receive comprehensive training in nanoparticle synthesis, device fabrication, and characterisation, with additional opportunities for skill development through national and international research collaborations, workshops, and conferences. The University of Southampton provides a supportive and inclusive environment, demonstrated by its Athena SWAN award and commitment to equality, diversity, and sustainability.
Funding is available for both UK and international students. UK students receive a tax-free stipend of £98,793 over 3.5 years, including tuition fees, while international students may receive a competitive stipend of £184,215 over 3.5 years. Horizon Europe fee waivers and Presidential Bursaries cover the difference between overseas and UK fees for qualifying students. The stipend includes a discretionary fund for training and travel, and funding is awarded on a rolling basis.
Applicants must hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent. Required application materials include a research proposal, CV, two academic references, degree transcripts and certificates, and proof of English language qualification if applicable. Applications are considered as received and may close early if a suitable candidate is identified.
To apply, select the programme type 'Research' for 2026/27 in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, search for 'PhD Engineering & the Environment (7175)', and add the supervisor's name in section 2 of the application. Submit all required documents and apply early for the best chance at securing funding. For general queries, contact [email protected], or reach out to Dr Daniel Zabek at [email protected] for an initial conversation.
The University of Southampton offers generous maternity policies, onsite childcare, and a range of benefits to support employee well-being and work-life balance. The institution is committed to sustainability and has received the Platinum EcoAward.
