About this position

Tampere University is seeking a highly motivated Doctoral Researcher to join the Laboratory for Future Electronics in the Electrical Engineering Unit, Faculty of Information and Communication Sciences. The position is part of the H2024 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network project 'Holistic integration of eco-Friendly design tools and materials, fabrication technologies for the responsible co-creation of future Sustainable integrated electronic systems (FERNS)', which brings together 20 universities, research institutes, and industrial partners from eight countries. The research focuses on developing printed, non-toxic, bioderived, and biodegradable supercapacitors for low-power wearable and farming applications. The successful candidate will work on the preparation, characterization, and optimization of porous carbon electrode ink derived from biochar, develop environmentally friendly electrolytes based on deep eutectic solvents, and fabricate supercapacitor cells and modules for low-power applications. The role involves advanced materials characterization (BET, SEM, XPS, TGA, DSC, FTIR) and device testing using electroanalytical techniques (CV, GCD, EIS). Collaboration is expected both within Tampere University and with international FERNS partners, including two secondments: RISE in Sweden (6 months) and InnoItaly in Italy (1 month). The position offers a fixed-term contract for 3 years, with a gross monthly salary of approximately 3800 EUR plus family allowance if applicable, and access to world-class training, workshops, conferences, and mobility opportunities. Applicants must have a relevant Master's degree, strong English skills, and expertise in materials and characterization for supercapacitors or batteries. The MSCA mobility rule applies, and candidates must not already hold a doctoral degree. The successful candidate will enroll in a structured doctoral program at Tampere University and benefit from a dynamic, international research environment, competitive staff benefits, and support for settling in Finland. Applications must be submitted online by November 13, 2025, and include all required documentation. For further information, contact Professor Matti Mäntysalo.
