About this position
The intersection of nature-inspired design and artistic principles with advanced 3D printing technologies offers a transformative approach to engineering applications. This PhD project aims to explore and develop innovative 3D-printed structures that leverage the aesthetics and efficiency of nature-inspired and art-based designs. The research will involve both experimental and computational investigations to optimise material use, structural integrity, environmental pollutant formation and performance. Collaboration with academic and industrial partners will be essential to drive the project's success and ensure practical applicability. Candidates will be encouraged to present and publish their work in national and international conferences and scientific journals. The position also includes opportunities to participate in teaching activities within the School of Engineering. Person Specification: Essential: A master’s degree in a relevant discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Design, Material Sciences, or related fields), ideally with a 1st class or at least a 2.1 degree (or non-UK equivalent). Meeting the University of Birmingham's English Language requirements (e.g., IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band) by the point of application. Desirable: Knowledge in 3D printing, biomimicry, structural design, and material science. Experience in conducting experimental research, data collection, and analysis. Interest in integrating art and design with engineering principles. Experience in numerical simulations and computational modelling. Proficiency in CAD software packages (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360).How to apply: Eligible applicants should send an expression of interest to Dr. Omid Doustdar ([email protected]), including: A 200-word cover letter explaining how your research interests align with this position. A CV detailing your academic and work experience, including the names of two referees. The applications will be reviewed, and the supervisory team will invite short-listed applicants for interviews. After the interview, the successful candidate will be instructed to apply online via the University of Birmingham website: https://sits.bham.ac.uk/lpages/EPS013.htm
