Join the Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA) as a PhD candidate in a cutting-edge project focused on Artificial Intelligence tools for phenotyping and genomic prediction in fruit trees. This interdisciplinary research opportunity is based at the CRAG research center in Cerdanyola del Vallès, with fieldwork at IRTA facilities in Lleida, Spain. The project aims to advance the digital transformation of the agrifood sector by developing AI-based methods for fruit phenotyping and predictive genomics, specifically targeting pip-fruit breeding programs (apples and pears).
As a PhD student, you will collaborate with the Genomics and Biotechnology Program and the Fruit Growing Program, working under the supervision of Dr. Maria José Aranzana and Dr. Luís Asín. Your responsibilities will include collecting, curating, and processing phenotypic and genotypic datasets, conducting field experiments, developing image analysis and predictive modeling methodologies using machine learning and AI tools, and integrating image-based and genomic datasets. You will also manage research data pipelines, participate in model training workflows, and contribute to scientific publications and conference presentations.
The position offers a four-year contract with a competitive salary that increases annually, starting at €1,363.10/gross per month and rising to €1,825.58/gross per month in the fourth year. IRTA covers doctoral school fees and provides a range of benefits, including flexible scheduling, remote work options, vacation days, and support for non-EU candidates in obtaining residence and work permits. The workweek is 37.5 hours, with Friday afternoons off and an intensive summer schedule.
Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, statistics, computer science, data management, or similar) and be eligible for a doctoral programme at Catalan universities. Essential skills include statistics, data management, AI model application, experience with large datasets, genomics, biology, plant breeding, programming (Python or R), and proficiency in English. Candidates must not have a previous PhD and must possess a valid Class B driving licence. Desirable qualifications include web-based tool development, advanced bioinformatics, field or laboratory experience with crops, strong statistical skills, and communication abilities. Catalan and Spanish language skills are valued.
