The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD position in AI-Enhanced Planning in Shipbuilding Supply Chains. This opportunity is part of the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre, a national hub dedicated to advancing applied artificial intelligence (AI) in the maritime sector. The maritime industry is undergoing rapid digitization, with increasing adoption of AI technologies to improve operational data management and planning. Traditional planning methods often struggle with the uncertainty and variability inherent in complex engineer-to-order shipbuilding. This PhD project aims to address these challenges by developing AI-enhanced planning systems for shipbuilding supply chains. The research will focus on how AI can support decision-makers in analyzing real-time and historical data, coordinating operators, equipment, and facilities, and managing operations across multiple projects and supply chain partners. Key objectives include integrating AI into planning methods, anticipating disruptions, analyzing trade-offs in tactical sourcing decisions, and improving overall supply chain performance.

As a PhD candidate, you will join the Production Management Research Group at NTNU, collaborating with industry and public partners within the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre. The research environment is world-leading, offering opportunities to investigate how AI can reshape planning and logistics in shipbuilding. The Norwegian Maritime AI Centre is funded by the Research Council of Norway and its partners for 2026-2030, with approximately 25 doctoral scholarships and several postdoc positions available. The Centre addresses diverse use cases, including logistics, ship design, voyage planning, condition monitoring, crew training, maritime traffic, decarbonization, and autonomous ships.

The position offers a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. The employment period is three years, and the position is conditional on external funding. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better according to NTNU's grading scale. Excellent written and oral English language skills are essential. Preferred qualifications include experience with machine learning or AI technologies, Scandinavian language skills, and prior industry or research experience in engineer-to-order manufacturing.
