The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a three-year PhD fellowship in women’s health and epidemiology, based at the Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine (IKOM) in Trondheim. This position is part of the PCOS and Women’s Health Research Group, a collaborative initiative between NTNU and St. Olavs hospital, and is funded by the Liaison Committee between the Central Norway Regional Health Authority (RHA) and NTNU.

The PhD project is a comprehensive follow-up study of approximately 750 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), leveraging data from previous clinical studies and the HUNT4 Survey as a reference population. The research aims to address significant knowledge gaps regarding women’s health in peri- and postmenopausal stages, focusing on cardiovascular health, respiratory function, chronic pain, and musculoskeletal health. The project involves collecting new longitudinal clinical data through questionnaires, blood sampling, and physical examinations, contributing to improved patient pathways, early prevention strategies, and long-term care for women with PCOS.

The research environment is dynamic and interdisciplinary, with expertise spanning gynecology, midwifery, epidemiology, and biostatistics. The group has decades of experience in clinical and epidemiological research related to PCOS and women’s health. The fellowship offers opportunities for close clinical collaboration, access to unique long-term datasets, and engagement in an internationally relevant research field with substantial public health impact.

The main supervisor for the PhD candidate will be Professor Eszter Vanky, a consultant gynecologist. The position is intended as a three-year, full-time role, with the possibility of part-time work combined with clinical duties. The desired start date is September 1, 2026, though an earlier start may be discussed.

Key duties include developing statistical analysis plans for doctoral thesis papers, performing data processing and statistical analyses, preparing manuscripts for academic and popular science dissemination, writing and defending a doctoral thesis, and completing the mandatory PhD program in Medicine and Health Sciences at NTNU. Candidates must be prepared for changes to work duties after employment.

Applicants must have a background in medicine or a completed master's degree in medical and health sciences, psychology, public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, or another relevant field (equivalent to 120 credits). A strong academic record (B or better according to NTNU's grading scale) is required, though candidates with weaker grades may be considered if they demonstrate particular suitability for PhD education. Admission requirements for the Medical Faculty's PhD program must be met, and excellent written and oral English skills are essential. Preferred qualifications include experience in quantitative statistical analysis and epidemiology, familiarity with statistical software (SPSS, STATA, SAS, or R), publications as first author or co-author, academic writing in English, and clinical work within gynecology, pain medicine, general practice, physiotherapy, or psychology. Speaking a Scandinavian language is desirable but not mandatory.

The position offers a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund deducted. The employment period is three years, and the position is conditional on external funding. Employees are expected to be physically present and available at the institution daily, and the appointment is carried out in accordance with Norwegian regulations and export control legislation.
