About this position

This fully-funded PhD position at The Dodd-Walls Centre for Photonic and Quantum Technologies offers an exciting opportunity to advance research in the development of photoactive molecules for nitroxyl (HNO) generation. HNO-based drugs have demonstrated significant potential in treating conditions such as congestive heart failure, vascular dysfunction, cancer, and stroke. However, nitroxyl is inherently unstable, rapidly dimerising in aqueous solution and reacting with biomolecules, which complicates its study and application.

The project focuses on designing and synthesizing HNO donor molecules that generate HNO in situ, using light activation as a precise and efficient method to release compounds at specific locations and times. The research will involve coupling established phototriggers (chromophores) with HNO donor molecules, followed by detailed studies on the synthesis and photodecomposition mechanisms of these systems. This work is highly interdisciplinary, combining aspects of organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, and photochemistry.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment within the School of Science at Auckland University of Technology, collaborating with Professor Nicola Brasch. The position is fully funded for three years, including a stipend of approximately NZ$34,000 per annum and full coverage of tuition fees. Additional funding is available to support the research programme, including travel to conferences, ensuring comprehensive support for academic and professional development.
