About this position

The University of Malaya, in collaboration with Hokkaido University and other international partners, is offering three PhD positions as part of the MSE × NEXUS “Green Technology” Research Collaboration Grant (2026–2028). The research focuses on the green conversion of palm oil industry waste into high-value renewable energy, specifically Bio-Compressed Natural Gas (Bio-CNG), supporting Malaysia’s renewable energy diversification and circular economy goals.

Successful candidates will join a multidisciplinary team and gain exposure to cutting-edge research in bioprocess engineering, material science, biotechnology, and data science. The three PhD projects include: (1) Green Pretreatment of EFB for Enhanced Biogas Production, (2) Anaerobic Co-digestion and Microbial Process Optimization, and (3) Biogas Upgrading via Biochar-Based Technologies. The program offers strong interdisciplinary training, access to excellent research facilities, and opportunities for international exposure, including yearly research attachments at Hokkaido University and participation in international conferences.

Applicants must be Malaysian citizens with a first-class degree (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related fields, and must have at least one ISI publication. Candidates should be highly motivated, proactive, able to work in a multidisciplinary environment, and possess good communication skills. The funding package includes a monthly stipend of RM 3,200 for up to 36 months, a PhD tuition fee waiver, and additional support for research activities and professional development.
