About this position
The University of Eastern Finland (UEF) is offering a fully funded PhD position for a Doctoral Researcher in the field of Aqueous Binder Development and Aqueous Processing of Ni-rich Cathode Materials for Lithium-ion Batteries. This opportunity is based at the Department of Technical Physics, Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, on the Kuopio campus. The research focuses on developing advanced aqueous-based binders and integrating them into processing routes for Ni-rich cathode materials, aiming to enhance the performance and sustainability of lithium-ion batteries.
The project is ideal for candidates passionate about materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, and sustainable energy storage. The research involves material and binder design, comprehensive characterization, electrode fabrication, and electrochemical measurements. The successful candidate will conduct high-quality research, disseminate results through publications and conferences, and collaborate with university and industry partners.
Applicants must have a Master’s degree in chemistry, physics, material science and engineering, electrochemistry, or a related field, with strong hands-on experience in material characterization and data analysis. Additional experience in rechargeable batteries, electrode materials, aqueous binders, and advanced characterization methods is advantageous. Proficiency in English and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are required.
The position is fully funded for three years, with a starting salary of approximately EUR 2,650 – 2,785 per month, and includes staff benefits such as occupational health care, training, discounted campus lunches, and sports services. The application deadline is 23 February 2026. Applicants should submit their application via the UEF electronic application form, including all required documents and official translations if necessary. For further information, contact Associate Professor Haidong Liu at [email protected].
This is an excellent opportunity to join an international research environment and contribute to next-generation battery technology in Finland, a country known for its high quality of life and research support.
