This PhD position at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Bioengineering offers an exciting opportunity to explore the proteomes of circulating tumour cells (CTCs) from patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) using advanced single-cell proteomics. As part of the EU-funded MIPrecise network (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network), the project focuses on developing and applying mass spectrometry and nano–liquid handling workflows to characterize individual tumour cells isolated from patient blood samples. The research leverages molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based probes for selective capture and fluorescent labeling of CTCs, enabling precise isolation and downstream single-cell analysis. State-of-the-art Orbitrap mass spectrometry, automated sample preparation, and computational integration with transcriptomic data will be used to identify protein signatures associated with tumour aggressiveness and metastasis, aiming to define multiomic biomarkers for improved cancer detection and patient stratification.
The successful candidate will join the Cell Diversity Lab led by Associate Professor Erwin M. Schoof, a recognized leader in single-cell proteomics, and collaborate with partners from BAM (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung), Linnaeus University, and Umeå University. The position provides extensive training in mass spectrometry, microfluidics, data analysis, and cancer biology within a vibrant, interdisciplinary European network dedicated to developing molecularly precise, sustainable diagnostic technologies.
Responsibilities include developing and optimizing single-cell proteomics workflows, performing sample preparation and analysis using Orbitrap-based mass spectrometry, integrating MIP-based CTC capture and fluorescence sorting, combining proteomic and transcriptomic data for biomarker discovery, and collaborating across academia and industry. Applicants must have a two-year master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field, strong experimental skills, interest in single-cell analysis and cancer biology, basic computational biology expertise, and good English communication skills. Beneficial skills include experience with mass spectrometry, proteomics, microfluidics, programming (Python), and single-cell technologies.
The position is funded for three years, with salary and benefits per Danish Confederation of Professional Associations agreement. The application deadline is 30 November 2025. Strong experimental skills in biochemistry, cell biology, or analytical workflows are required. Interest in single-cell analysis, cancer biology, and translational research is essential. Basic expertise in computational biology (e.g., bioinformatics, machine learning) is expected, with a willingness to advance these skills. Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken, are necessary.
