Description

The Duarte Campos Lab at the Centre for Molecular Biology Heidelberg (ZMBH), Heidelberg University, is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate for a project on xolographic biofabrication of in vitro vascularized tissue models. This research is part of the Cluster of Excellence 3D Matter Made to Order (3DMM2O), funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), and involves collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The project aims to advance next-generation biofabrication technologies by combining 3D bioprinting, photopolymerization, and tissue engineering to create intricate, perfusable vascular networks using xolography—a volumetric printing technique that enables rapid, contact-free fabrication of 3D tissue constructs. The successful candidate will develop and characterize vascularized in vitro tissue models, working with both natural and synthetic bioinks, 2D and 3D cell cultures, and advanced imaging and analysis techniques such as two-photon imaging, qPCR, and nanoindentation. The research will contribute to the development of reliable tissue models for tissue engineering, disease modeling, and drug testing, with a focus on maintaining cell viability and mimicking physiological function through advanced vascularization strategies. Applicants should have a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Bioengineering, or a related field. Preferred qualifications include experience in hydrogel handling, 3D (bio)printing, microscopy, cell culture, and/or microfluidic systems. Excellent academic achievements, strong English skills, and motivation to work in an international, collaborative environment are essential. The position is fully funded (TV-L E13, 75%, two years with possible extension) and offers access to state-of-the-art infrastructure at both Heidelberg University and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The start date is April 1, 2026, and the application deadline is November 28, 2025. Applications should be submitted as a single PDF file (including motivation letter, CV, transcripts, and 2-3 referees) to Prof. Daniela Duarte Campos at dcampos@uni-heidelberg.de. For more information, visit the lab's open positions page . Heidelberg University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity. Qualified female candidates and disabled persons are especially encouraged to apply.

Funding

The position is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the Cluster of Excellence 3D Matter Made to Order (3DMM2O). Salary is based on the TV-L scale (E13), 75% (29,625 hours/week) for two years with the possibility of extension. The position is fully funded and includes access to state-of-the-art infrastructure at Heidelberg University and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

How to apply

Submit your application as a single PDF file including a letter of motivation, CV, transcripts, and names of 2-3 referees to Prof. Daniela Duarte Campos at dcampos@uni-heidelberg.de. Applications by post will not be returned. Refer to the provided link for more details.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Bioengineering, or related disciplines. Previous experience in hydrogel handling, 3D (bio)printing, microscopy, cell culture, and/or microfluidic systems is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate excellent academic achievements and English language skills, and be motivated to work in an international team environment.
