About this position

The University of Adelaide's School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Advanced Microwave Sensor Design for Detection Technologies. This industry-supported project, in collaboration with Codan—a global leader in communications and sensing—focuses on developing novel microwave sensor (uWS) designs for integration with metal detectors, aiming to deliver state-of-the-art detection capabilities. Research applications span detection of subsoil layers, utilities, landmines, IEDs, UAV-based minefield mapping, through-wall detection, advanced sensing for pipe and cable location, and geological mapping.

PhD candidates will engage in one or more of the following research themes: innovative uWS antenna design compatible with metal detector coils for minimum-metal landmine and deep object detection; development of low power, compact microwave electronics optimized for handheld platforms; and signal processing for embedded systems, including robust, real-time detection algorithms for complex environments.

The scholarship offers a generous package of AUD $80,000 per year, covering both living stipend and tuition fees. Successful candidates may also access paid industry placements with Codan, providing valuable professional experience and a potential pathway to employment after graduation.

Eligibility is restricted to Australian citizens who meet the University of Adelaide's PhD admission criteria and possess relevant experience in electrical engineering, physics, signal processing, or related fields. Skills in RF systems, antennas, or embedded electronics are highly valued. The University of Adelaide is ranked among the top 1% of universities worldwide, offering a vibrant research community and opportunities to work alongside industry leaders on technologies with humanitarian and defence impact.

Codan Limited is renowned for its rugged, reliable hardware, software, and embedded systems, serving global markets in metal detection, communications, safety, security, broadcast, and productivity solutions. The company operates in over 150 countries, supporting government, corporate, NGO, humanitarian, security, and emergency response sectors.

To apply, candidates should prepare a CV, academic transcript, and a brief statement of research interests, and contact the principal supervisor, Associate Professor Bian Ng, at [email protected]. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and the scholarship will be withdrawn once a suitable candidate is identified.
