About this position

This PhD project at the University of Bristol explores the fascinating physics of Mott insulators, a class of materials whose electrons are localized due to strong Coulomb repulsion, despite having a half-filled electron band. By doping these insulators with electrons or holes, researchers can induce exotic metallic states and potentially high-temperature superconductivity. The project focuses on a family of recently-discovered compounds, Nb3X8 (where X = Cl, Br, or I), which are considered the best realization of an ideal single-band Mott insulator to date.

As a PhD student, you will collaborate with an international team, including theoreticians from Radboud University, to grow single crystals, dope them, and characterize their structural and electrical properties. The Quantum and Soft Matter Theme at Bristol provides access to dedicated materials synthesis and low temperature laboratories, as well as a vibrant community of staff and fellow PhD students for support and advice.
