Description

Forschungszentrum Jülich is offering a PhD position focused on the experimental and kinetic investigation of supercritical steam reforming in high-pressure reactors. The successful candidate will coordinate, commission, and operate a high-pressure reactor for the steam reforming of methanol and dimethyl ether, working with both commercial and academic catalysts. The role involves experimental characterization of steam reforming under supercritical reaction conditions, kinetic investigation and modelling, and integration of experimental results into reactor and process simulation. Results will be analyzed and presented at scientific conferences and in journals, with opportunities to support third-party funding applications and participate in academic teaching and public relations.

The position is based at Brainergy Park Jülich and offers access to excellent scientific and technical facilities. Doctoral researchers benefit from continuous expert guidance, participation in international conferences and project meetings, and a structured program of continuing education and networking opportunities via JuDocS, the Jülich Center for Doctoral Researchers and Supervisors. The working environment is diverse and inclusive, with targeted services for international employees and a strong commitment to equal opportunities.

Funding is provided in line with 75% of pay group 13 of the TVöD-Bund collective agreement, plus a special payment (Christmas bonus) amounting to 60% of one month’s salary. The position is part-time (29.25 hours per week) with flexible working hours and 30 days of annual leave. The initial contract is for 3 years, with the prospect of longer-term employment. Further details on pay scales and benefits can be found on the BMI website and the Jülich careers portal.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in chemical engineering, process engineering, mechanical engineering, technical chemistry, or relevant industrial engineering. Interest in practical catalyst testing in laboratory-scale pilot plants, enjoyment of exploratory scientific work, strong analytical and methodological skills, and good written and spoken English are required. Both independent and team-oriented approaches are valued.

To apply, candidates should submit their application via the official Forschungszentrum Jülich job portal. International applicants are supported by the International Advisory Service. For more information on doctoral degrees and the application process, visit the provided links.
