About this position

Uppsala University is offering a fully funded PhD position in Archaeology, with a focus on digital heritage and sustainability, based at Campus Gotland in Visby, Sweden. The position is part of the Graduate School in Sustainability Studies (GRASS) and the interdisciplinary project Digital Innovation for Sustainable Heritage (DISH). The research will center on developing innovative digital tools and protocols for sustainable cultural heritage management, specifically through the application of heritage twins to the archaeological record of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Visby.

The project seeks candidates interested in bridging archaeology, conservation, and digital humanities. Research activities will involve integrating data from museum collections and excavation archives with digital heritage twins, using advanced digital documentation methods such as GIS, photogrammetry, LIDAR, and digital modeling systems (e.g., Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine). The aim is to document, visualize, and analyze archaeological environments over time and space, and to develop protocols for data sharing, management, and stakeholder engagement. The project is highly interdisciplinary, involving collaboration with experts in digital methods, machine learning, and AI, and will contribute to knowledge transfer and public engagement in heritage management.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Archaeology or equivalent, with proven experience in at least two digital documentation methods. Additional skills in data analysis, Python programming, and digital modeling are desirable. The position is full-time for four years, with a fixed salary and the possibility of teaching or administrative duties up to 20%. Application materials include an introduction letter, CV, contact details for referees, master’s thesis, project plan, and degree certificates. The application deadline is 27 April 2026.

For more information, contact Senior Lecturer Dr Patrick Randolph-Quinney ([email protected]) or Professor Michael Lindblom ([email protected]). Apply through Uppsala University's recruitment system. This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about digital heritage, archaeology, and sustainability research in an international and collaborative environment.
