Description

The Brain Networks Research and Development Group at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, led by Professor Thomas Knösche, is offering a three-year PhD position focused on the role of long-range brain connectivity in human language processing. The project will utilize EEG and MRI experiments, alongside realistic modeling of biological neural networks, to advance understanding of how brain networks support language and cognition. This research is conducted in collaboration with TU Berlin, TU Chemnitz, the Czech Academy of Sciences, and is funded by the DFG. The group provides access to state-of-the-art facilities, including five MR scanners (3T Connectom, 7T Terra.X), MEG, EEG, and TMS, within a world-leading research environment. Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering, computer science, neuroscience, physics, or a related discipline, and possess strong programming skills (C++, Matlab, Python). Experience with EEG or MEG experimentation and data analysis is advantageous but not essential. Skills or interest in MRI processing (especially diffusion MRI), biophysical neural modeling, and machine learning are highly valued. The group is dedicated to developing methods for investigating, modeling, and understanding brain networks and their role in human behavior and cognition, with current projects spanning non-invasive brain stimulation, sensory perception, and the intersection of human cognition and machine learning. The position is funded for three years, with a salary based on 65% TVöD E13, and may be extended for an additional year pending future funding.
