About this position
The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) is offering a fully funded PhD position in Computational Biophysics at the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA USI-SUPSI), within the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI) in Lugano. This opportunity is part of the European project Injectheal and involves the development of coarse-grained models for dendrons and small molecules, as well as atomistic and coarse-grained simulations of polymers, dendrons, proteins, and small molecules. The successful candidate will also collaborate on other ongoing projects within the laboratory.
Applicants should hold a Master's degree (or have submitted their thesis for evaluation) in mathematics, physics, bioengineering, or related fields. The ideal candidate will have a thesis focused on computational methods applied to biological systems, including proteins, cellular membranes, natural and synthesized compounds, or nucleic acids. Essential skills include proficiency in molecular dynamics algorithms and software, development of coarse-grained molecular models, and expertise with computational tools such as Gromacs, Amber, and NAMD. Strong written and spoken English skills, as well as communication and collaboration abilities, are required.
SUPSI offers a fixed-term employment contract, a stimulating and international research environment at IDSIA USI-SUPSI's new campus in Lugano-Viganello, and access to the robotics lab facilities. The position comes with an attractive salary in line with Swiss standards and covers costs for participation in high-profile conferences and workshops.
To apply, candidates must submit their application electronically via the dedicated application form by 16 March 2026. Required documents include a CV, publications list, three published papers in the relevant field, names and email addresses of three reference contacts, and a motivation letter outlining past research experience and future interests. Applications that are incomplete, submitted to incorrect addresses, or received after the deadline will not be considered. Additional documentation, such as a criminal record certificate or identity document, may be requested at a later stage.
For further information, applicants may contact Prof. Andrea Danani. This position provides an excellent opportunity to engage in cutting-edge computational biophysics research within a collaborative and international academic environment.
