About this position
KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden is offering a full-time doctoral (PhD) position in experimental fluid mechanics and bacterial biofilms. The position is based in the Department of Engineering Mechanics, specifically within the Fluid and Surface Group (FLOW), a leading research community in fluid mechanics. The research project, funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR), aims to uncover the fundamental mechanisms governing biofilm morphology and growth under flow conditions, addressing challenges relevant to both industry and academia.
The successful candidate will work at the intersection of fluid dynamics, microbiology, and advanced experimentation, utilizing a unique experimental platform, continuum modeling, and machine-learning-based analysis methods. The project is highly interdisciplinary, combining engineering mechanics, biology, and computational approaches to understand and predict biofilm structure and development in dynamic environments.
Supervision will be provided by Dr. Shervin Bagheri, an expert in fluid mechanics at KTH. The position offers a stimulating research environment at one of Europe’s leading technical universities, with opportunities for professional growth and collaboration.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold a second cycle degree (e.g., master’s) or have completed at least 240 higher education credits (with at least 60 at the second-cycle level), or possess equivalent knowledge. Proficiency in English (English B/6) is required. Candidates should demonstrate goal orientation, perseverance, independence, teamwork skills, and the ability to analyze complex issues. Experience in computational fluid mechanics is a significant advantage.
Funding: The position is fully funded with a monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement. Employment is full-time for up to four years, with employee benefits and support for professional development.
Application: Applications must be submitted through KTH’s recruitment system by 31 January 2026. Required documents include a CV, application letter, diplomas, grades, language certificates, and relevant publications. All documents must be certified and, if necessary, translated into English or Swedish.
This is an excellent opportunity for motivated candidates interested in experimental fluid mechanics, biofilms, and interdisciplinary research to join a dynamic and innovative research group at KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
