About this position

Join Aalborg University’s Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Computer Science, for a PhD position in Human–Robot Interaction in Clinical Practice. This opportunity is part of the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design and focuses on advancing human-robot collaboration within healthcare environments. The project aims to support clinical workflows and professional practices through innovative interaction designs and robotic systems, applying real-world clinical knowledge to interface development between humans and robots.

The research is conducted in close collaboration with the Department of Sustainability and Planning, blending technical research on interaction technologies and robotic systems with socio-technical studies of human–robot collaboration. The PhD fellow will join the Human-Centred Computing (HCC) research section, the Human Augmentation and Collaboration (HAC) group, and the Physical and Embodied Interaction (PEI) group. These groups specialize in designing and evaluating interactive systems that enhance human capabilities and investigate interactions with intelligent systems in physical environments. Additionally, the fellow will be invited to participate in the Human–Robot Interaction Lab, an interdisciplinary research lab dedicated to real-world human–robot interaction studies.

The main tasks include conducting empirical studies in healthcare settings (observations, interviews), designing and developing software prototypes, and contributing to interdisciplinary case studies. The project will generate new knowledge on how robots communicate intentions, support collaboration, and are experienced by human users in clinical contexts. The broader initiative also covers socio-technical and organizational aspects, offering opportunities for collaboration across departments and with healthcare professionals.

Teaching and supervision are integral to the role, with activities in programmes such as Information Technology, Digitalisation, and Application Development. The PhD fellow will supervise student projects and participate in courses related to human-computer interaction and software engineering.

Applicants should have a strong interest in human-robot interaction and emerging healthcare technologies. Required competencies include software prototype design, user study execution and analysis, and strong English communication skills. A Master’s degree in a relevant field (human-computer interaction, computer science, software engineering, digitalization, application development, or related discipline) is mandatory. Experience with robots or hardware is desirable but not essential. The ideal candidate is motivated for interdisciplinary research, collaborative work, and demonstrates curiosity, independence, and strong communication skills. Danish language skills are advantageous but not required.

The position is funded for three years, with salary and terms governed by the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the state (AC collective agreement). The PhD fellow must complete 30 ECTS of PhD courses, gain teaching experience, and undertake an external research stay (preferably 3–6 months at a foreign institution). The appointment starts from 15 August 2026 or soon thereafter.
