The Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of California, Riverside is seeking a PhD student for Fall 2026 to join research focused on non-exhaust emissions measurement and chemical characterization from mobile sources. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Georgios Karavalakis, director of the Sustainable Mobility and Environmental Laboratory, and will be based at the Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT).

This position involves experimental research on air quality, specifically measuring and characterizing brake-wear and tire-wear emissions from vehicles. The research will include laboratory and field measurement campaigns, designing sampling systems for in-use vehicle testing, and setting up experiments to collect emissions data such as PM2.5, PM10, particle number, and particle size distributions. Candidates will analyze and verify collected data, troubleshoot equipment, and perform chemical analysis using chromatographic techniques and qualitative analysis with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and EDX detectors. Comprehensive data analysis using statistical models and scientific writing are also expected.

Applicants should have a degree in Mechanical, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering, with experience in air quality and combustion. Laboratory experience, especially with real-time particle equipment and chromatographic techniques, is preferred. Proficiency in Solidworks design software and possession of a valid US driving license are required. The position offers the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse team of graduate students and research faculty on ongoing projects in sustainable mobility and environmental technology.
