About this position
The Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of California, Riverside is seeking a PhD student to join experimental research focused on non-exhaust emissions measurement and chemical characterization from mobile sources. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Georgios Karavalakis, director of the Sustainable Mobility and Environmental Laboratory, and will be based at the Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT).
The research involves laboratory and field measurement campaigns to collect data on brake-wear and tire-wear emissions from various vehicles. Responsibilities include designing sampling systems for in-use vehicle testing (requiring Solidworks proficiency), setting up experiments to collect emissions data (PM2.5, PM10, particle number, and size distributions), analyzing and verifying data, troubleshooting equipment, performing chemical analysis using chromatographic techniques, conducting qualitative analysis with SEM/EDX, and comprehensive data analysis using statistical models. The candidate will also contribute to writing scientific papers.
Applicants should have a degree in Mechanical, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering, with experience in air quality and combustion. Laboratory experience, especially with real-time particle equipment or chromatographic techniques, is preferred. A valid US driving license is required. The position offers the opportunity to work with a diverse team of graduate students and research faculty on ongoing projects in a collaborative environment.
