This fully funded PhD position in Philosophy of Science is offered at the Université de Lorraine, Nancy, France, in partnership with the Archives Poincaré and co-supervision with IHPST (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, CNRS, Paris). The doctoral student will join the GRASP project ('Gradability across Science and Epistemic Practices'), funded by the ANR for four years, starting April 2026. The GRASP project brings together philosophers of science, epistemologists, and experts in physics, mathematics, applied mathematics, and biology, fostering a vibrant international research environment.

The research focus is on explanatory progress and degrees of understanding in mathematical and mathematized sciences. The successful candidate will investigate how explanations and understanding of phenomena can be improved when these are covered by established theories, laws, or models, and when mathematical methods are applied. Techniques such as approximation schemes, series expansions, perturbation methods, renormalization group approaches, asymptotic analysis, optimization strategies, and coarse-/fine-grained modeling will be explored, with case studies primarily drawn from physics. The project encourages strong engagement with contemporary literature on scientific explanation and understanding, and welcomes cross-comparisons with mathematics.

The PhD will be completed at the Archives Poincaré, a renowned research institute affiliated with Université de Lorraine and CNRS, recognized for its work in philosophy of science and mathematics. Co-supervision with IHPST ensures access to two leading French research environments. The candidate will benefit from collaborative seminars, workshops, and conferences, and is expected to actively participate in the international networks associated with GRASP.

Funding is provided for three years, with a monthly gross salary of 2300 € (net approximately 1920 € after deductions), including rights to unemployment benefits for up to 18 months post-contract. There are no mandatory teaching duties, but optional teaching (up to 64 hours/year) may supplement income by 150-200 € monthly.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Philosophy, with training in philosophy of science and epistemology. Additional scientific qualifications are advantageous but not required. Essential skills include philosophical writing, teamwork, and English proficiency (minimum B2). French is not required at entry, but candidates should aim to develop fluency during the PhD.
