About this position

The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) Microelectronics group, part of the Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, is offering a fully funded 3-year PhD position focused on Wearable Design and Multi-Modal Monitoring of Brain Disorders. This opportunity is part of the NeuroEar project, which aims to revolutionize seizure detection and prediction by leveraging multimodal monitoring technologies beyond traditional EEG methods.

The successful candidate will lead the development of a cutting-edge multimodal neuromonitoring system. Key responsibilities include integrating a discrete impedance measurement prototype into an in-ear earpiece equipped with EEG sensors, conducting clinical and feasibility studies at the Danish Epilepsy Centre (Filadelfia), and applying machine learning and AI techniques to process and benchmark data. The project also involves designing and implementing a low-power impedance integrated circuit suitable for wearable devices, advancing the practical application of this technology for everyday use.

As part of the program, the PhD student will spend three months at Georgia Tech/Emory University (USA), focusing on machine learning and data benchmarking in collaboration with leading experts. This international experience will provide valuable exposure to advanced research environments and methodologies.

Applicants should possess a master’s degree in electronics, computer engineering, biomedical engineering, physics, or a closely related field. Essential qualifications include expertise in electronic hardware design (PCB and off-the-shelf components), analog/mixed-signal ultra-low power CMOS circuit design (amplifiers and bias circuits), and proficiency in machine learning and AI for data processing. Familiarity with industry-standard EDA tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, Spectre, or Mentor Graphics, and a solid understanding of semiconductor device physics, especially MOSFET operation, modeling, and scaling, are required. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, and excellent English communication skills are essential. Preferred candidates will have hands-on experience with layout and tape-out of CMOS chips.

The position offers a competitive monthly gross salary of 36,608 DKK including pension, with the possibility of a higher salary step for candidates with relevant postgraduate experience. Employment is contingent upon enrollment approved by the PhD School and will be in accordance with faculty and national regulations. The preferred start date is from May 1, 2026, with flexibility for the successful candidate.

Applications must include a motivated application, CV, master’s and bachelor’s degree certificates and transcripts, completed TEK PhD application forms, documentation of grading schemes, and up to two relevant publications if available. All documents must be in English and PDF format, following the specified upload guide. The application deadline is February 20, 2026, at 11:59 PM CET/CEST. Assessment will be conducted by an expert committee, and only shortlisted candidates will receive a written evaluation. Interviews and tests may be part of the selection process.

SDU encourages applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background and is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive research environment. The university conducts research in critical technologies and may perform background checks on candidates.
