PhD Position: Medicines Optimisation in Palliative and End of Life Care Queen’s University Belfast in United Kingdom

This PhD opportunity at Queen’s University Belfast’s School of Pharmacy focuses on medicines optimisation in palliative and end of life care. The project aims to enhance quality of life and minimise harm for patients whose care priorities shift from disease treatment to comfort and symptom management. Previous research has highlighted the risks associated with potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) in palliative settings, including reduced quality of life and increased symptom burden.

The successful candidate will investigate prescribing practices and medication use among patients receiving palliative and hospice care services. Research methods will include both quantitative approaches (such as questionnaires and review of healthcare records) and qualitative techniques (including interviews and focus groups). Comprehensive training will be provided in qualitative and quantitative research methods, as well as in the evaluation of prescribing data.

Impact activities for this project will involve disseminating findings at research conferences and through academic publications, contributing to the advancement of best practices in palliative care. Anticipated project costs include conference registration, travel and accommodation, data analysis software (N-Vivo, SPSS), and travel for data collection, all covered by bench fees.

Funding is available through the Northern Ireland Department for the Economy (DfE), which offers funded studentships covering tuition fees, stipend, and a contribution to running costs. UK applicants are automatically considered for these studentships, while international applicants may request consideration for a limited number of fully-funded places. The selection process is competitive, with shortlisted candidates invited for interview. The application deadline for DfE studentships is 16th January 2026, and interviews will be held in February 2026.

Applicants should have a strong academic background in pharmacy, medical science, public health, or a related field, and demonstrate interest or experience in palliative care and research methodologies.
