About this position

Join the Cluster of Excellence "BlueMat: Water-Driven Materials" at Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon and contribute to pioneering research in sustainable materials inspired by water. This PhD position, based at the Institute of Metallic Biomaterials, offers the opportunity to work on the project "Multiscale Operando Super-Resolution Imaging of Water Imbibition in Hierarchically Porous Materials." The project aims to develop advanced super-resolution imaging methods using deep learning to study water transport in Si-based porous materials across multiple length and time scales.

As a doctoral researcher, you will characterize fluid transport phenomena such as velocity and homogeneity in hierarchically porous Si-based materials. You will conduct multiscale imaging using MHz X-ray projection imaging, X-ray micro- and nano-computed tomography, and scanning electron microscopy. A key aspect of the role involves designing and implementing deep learning models to enhance the resolution of large field-of-view imaging techniques and integrating imaging data across modalities for improved spatial resolution and quantitative analysis. Collaboration with both experimental and computational teams is central to interpreting results and advancing the research goals.

The position is fully funded for three years, starting February 1st, 2026, and ending January 31st, 2029. You will benefit from access to state-of-the-art imaging facilities, high-performance computing resources, and opportunities to participate in international conferences, research stays, and collaborative networks. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, materials science, computer science, or a related discipline. Desired skills include experience with X-ray or electron imaging techniques, image processing, proficiency in Python, and familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, an interest in interdisciplinary research, excellent English communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential. Regular travel between Rostock and Hamburg (DESY) is expected.
