About this position

The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position within the MSCA Doctoral Networks project CHARM (Conservation Heritage Architecture, buildings and sites by Resilient Methods: hydro-climate factors). This research opportunity focuses on developing innovative strategies to reduce carbon and water footprints in cultural heritage buildings, ensuring their long-term preservation against water-related weathering and environmental damage.

The project aims to implement climate-related equations into Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) modelling frameworks, integrating them with LCA calculation software and testing in real-world scenarios. The research will evaluate new materials and bioinspired solutions for heritage conservation, addressing issues such as salt crystallisation, indoor moisture, wall humidity, consolidation products, and microbiological development. The LCA Working Group at UNIMORE, renowned for its expertise in sustainability assessment and use of advanced tools like SimaPro, will provide scientific support and access to proprietary databases developed over two decades.

The supervisory committee includes Professor Roberto Rosa (UNIMORE), Professor Benjamin Quesada (Universidad del Rosario, Colombia), and Dr. Simone Maranghi (Ecoinnovazione s.r.l., Italy). The position features a planned secondment at Universidad del Rosario in Bogota, Colombia, for four months, offering international research experience and collaboration. The successful candidate will enroll in the Doctoral Programme in Industrial Innovation Engineering at UNIMORE.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree in chemistry, materials sciences, engineering, or natural sciences, obtained within the last six years. Candidates must not have been awarded a PhD and must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Italy for more than 12 months in the three years prior to recruitment. Proficiency in English, motivation, creativity, and independence are essential. The selection process involves CV and motivation letter screening, followed by online interviews and presentations.

The position offers a 3-year full-time contract with a gross salary of €3821.53 per month plus €710 mobility allowance, and a family allowance if applicable. All compulsory deductions under national law apply. The employment terms comply with MSCA regulations and Italian labor laws. UNIMORE is a leading Italian university with strong links to industry and a multidisciplinary research environment, while Universidad del Rosario is a top Colombian institution with a focus on sustainability and environmental research.

Applications must be submitted online by April 30, 2026. For further details, visit the project website or contact Professor Roberto Rosa at [email protected]. This is an excellent opportunity for early-stage researchers seeking to advance their expertise in environmental science, materials engineering, and cultural heritage conservation within a dynamic international network.
