About this position

This fully funded PhD position offers a unique opportunity to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) caused by YARS1 mutations, a rare and incurable hereditary neuropathy. The project is a joint collaboration between Prof. Albena Jordanova (VIB-UAntwerp, Belgium) and Assist. Prof. Csilla Varnai (University of Birmingham, UK), and is supported by the Generet Award for Rare Diseases 2025 (King Baudouin Foundation).

The research will leverage actual nerve biopsies from CMT patients, iPSC-derived motor neurons, and Drosophila models to perform high-resolution spatial transcriptomics and proteomics. The aim is to uncover how YARS1 mutations drive peripheral nerve degeneration and to identify new therapeutic targets. The project will use multimodal bioinformatics to analyze omics datasets, guiding the selection of key genes for functional validation in experimental models.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary team at the VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurology and the University of Birmingham, benefiting from extensive training in both experimental (iPSC culture, Drosophila genetics, spatial omics) and computational (multi-omics integration, bioinformatics) approaches. The position offers access to state-of-the-art facilities in genomics, proteomics, microscopy, and structural biology, as well as opportunities for international mobility and career development.

Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and a Master’s degree or equivalent experience in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, or medicine (obtained no earlier than 01/03/2025). Essential skills include basic programming, statistical analysis, analytical thinking, and strong English communication. Experience with next generation sequencing, proteomics, wet lab techniques, and programming (R, Python) is desirable. The position is based primarily at Campus Drie Eiken, University of Antwerp, with opportunities to spend time in both Antwerp and Birmingham labs.

The scholarship covers a 2-year period with full benefits, renewable for two additional years upon positive evaluation. Additional allowances for commuting and internet connectivity are provided. The start date is as soon as possible, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
